BlenderBuilds Shutting Down

January 17th, 2008 by Rui Campos (rcas)

Hi all, the lack of updates and motivation to keep this going could only lead to one finale.

This site is shutting down.

Unless new blood arrives to bring the spirit of “One Predictable Build a Month” this site will close its doors soon.

So, if you are interested in managing this website and builds please post a comment about it.

Thanks all.

This really is no good news. I use Blender every day for modeling and wish I could help, but I cannot do coding, programming, compiling and etc. :(

I agree but there isn’t much I can do.

I submitted this as a story on blendernation (which should generate a lot of attention), though I haven’t gotten any word back yet…

    Hi,

It sad to hear that. Ok I can help. what do you need? I have a lot of experience with linux so I can help with the linux build (though I never built Blender before).

just email me so that we can see what can I do.

It’s always sad to see a website go,
but in this case one has to wonder:
given that graphicall has SO much
by way of Blender builds and variants,
wouldn’t it be smart to merge?

  6. Bmud Says:

I agree with Tom. Graphicall really picked up a ton of speed, and it seems like the right thing to do. Keep the domain and have it just redirect folks. It was a little too confusing having two build sites and having to check both.

But, the one thing this site that no other did was get us space navigator support which I haven’t seen in a SINGLE graphicall build. Is that code going to live on in the future?

  7. Tynach Says:

Personally, I always found more stuff on Graphicall, and lets face it: there have been quite a few skipped months here on Blender Builds.

I agree with the merging comment. I think it would be best. Even if all that happens is all the builds here get moved over there, and someone makes a monthly build and puts it there.

  8. Bart Robinson Says:

Unfortunate to hear, but perhaps for the best. With the rise of Graphicall.org I think anyone’s efforts moving forward should continue there.

  9. sycren Says:

Although It does not fit the domain name, have you thought about maybe having a more community driven site for materials, scripting, doccumentation, tutorials?

  10. RNS Says:

Sad to see it go,but I been coming to this site for a very long time and no update and the same posted build.I agree this site need more stuff like having members participating in this site with galleries, contest, tutorials and what ever it take to keep it open.
Now is too late for that ever happing.good luck.

There might be more interest if you were build a version of blender that isn’t already on other websites. In the last 2 years there has been a lot of momentum around Opensolaris and my searching has not turned up a single package for blender. There are package for Solaris sparc, but x86/x64 is a different matter.

    Just a thought.

I’m not way experienced, but have loved this site in the past, and if its just a matter of maintaining the website, I can do that. However, I have no experience with coding. =(

    Merge with graphicall.org!

  14. Panzer Says:

As the automated builder on graphicall.org I have to say I went to them first to offer my services. Here it felt like you only had a core team of builders and you where only offering your services. Seeing the svn commits and the average of 10 commits a day then something like quicker then monthly builds was needed. I scripted my three svn trunk builds and build nightly. and branch builds are just as easy. The only reason that I don’t have solaris builds is just that I don’t have solaris hardware. The idea you had was pretty sweet but hate to say it your slowness in getting stuff out is what put you out of biz. My builds are daily on hardware that most people would throw out. If you don’t like a build then wait 24 hours and another is around. Oh and it ain’t about you. People seem to love the fact you can post your own builds on graphicall. I would have loved to help here. But it seems there was no comm outside of the comments here. And the build team was set. And the missing months. That don’t look well. Yea I might miss a day or two due to power outage but a month. This stuff gets old hours after you build. And now with VM’s I can really make most of a build farm inside of one machine. And in fact plan to do just that. Daily builds not monthly.
