August Build - 3DConnexion, with a prize (UPDATE)
August 5th, 2007 by
Rui Campos (rcas)
UPDATE:
Now with 64 Bits version for the blender binary and the plugin, as well as our own Mac OS X Intel compilation.
Its been sometime since we rolled out a build. Work, moving, …. and more work kept some of us from the promise of one build per month.
But we had to come back and this time with a BANG, you read write, we are offering a prize with this new set of Builds.

NOTES:
Only one phrase per person. Or the first phrase will be selected and all others ignored.
The 3DConnexion builds already have the plugin, so no need to follow the instructions.
These builds are experimental (as it is common in our builds) and the developer would really love to have feedback on it, so he can improve things further.
3DConnexion has been working hard to get their devices supported in Blender.
As we didn’t want to miss the ride we decided to colaborate with them and bring you an Alpha version of the work done so far.
If you own any device from 3DConnexion, with these builds you will be able to use it.
How to use it:
1. Download and install the 3Dconnexion driver from:
http://www.3dconnexion.com2. Download the latest plug-in for your platform from above or from here :
http://cubelogic.org/blender/builds/
Should be available shortly too at http://www.3dconnexion.com3. Uncompress the zip file.
4. Copy the 3DxNdofBlender.plug file into the “plugins” folder. Make sure to copy the one related to your system architecture (PowerPC or intel). You should then have the following directory structure (the names could be slightly different):
blender-NDOF
– blender-NDOF.app
– plugins
—- 3DxNdofBlender.plug5. Make sure the 3Dconnexion driver is running.
6. Launch the blender-NDOF app.
7. You should now be able to use the device inside blender, including buttons to toggle modes (turntable/fly/transform) and constraints (unconstrained/dominant).
But this doesn’t end here, yes, we mentioned a prize too.
That’s right, 3DConnexion sponsored a SpaceNavigator for the person with the best comment on this post, but it has some rules applied.
You need to come up with a phrase that contains “BlenderBuilds” and “3DConnexion”. The best phrase wins a SpaceNavigator to use with Blender.
But now that you got all the information we will let you with the builds:
| Windows | Linux 32 Bits | Linux 64 Bits | Mac OS X PPC | Mac OS X Intel |
| Normal Optim. SSE2 3DConnexion |
i586 Normal i586 Debug i686 Optim. SSE i686 Optim. SSE2 i686 Optim. SSE3 i686 Optim. 3DNow 3DConnexion |
AMD 64 Normal | Norm. Py. 2.3 Norm. Py. 2.4 Norm. Py. 2.5 |
Norm. Py. 2.5 3DConnexion |
Plugins:
| Windows | Linux 32 Bits | Linux 64 Bits | Mac OS X |
Build notes:
Note 1: The builds named 3DConnexion have been compiled by Ettore, the developer from 3DConnexion.
Note 2: The competition ends on the 12th of August.
Note 3: Only one phrase per person.

Beautimous builds BlenderBuilds, so nice to make the 3DConnexion.
August 5th, 2007 at 18:59
since i already have a space navigator i would not liek to be entered, but if you like my phrase use it and give the navigator to the 2nd runner up:)
“from the BlenderBuilds came a build which made a 3dconnexion with the rest of the world and beyond”
message: blender is now part of the 3dconnexion univers, with it more amazing things will be developed since less time will be spent scrolling, and will open the eyes of the world to the power of 3dconnexiona nd blender

I already have one too. Dito on what BlenderMaster said.
August 6th, 2007 at 5:17
Thank you!
Q1: Does the August build correspond to 2.45RC2 ?
Q2: I’m running Mac OS 10.4.10 on an Intel duo, Python 2.5 installed. When I double-click on the August blender.app, it tries to launch but aborts. What am I missing?
August 6th, 2007 at 11:34
Hi Tom Telos:
Could you try and launch the application on the command line instead and tell the error it shows ?
Thanks,

what about linux 64bit?
August 6th, 2007 at 14:01
To shul:
I still need to find someone to compile a 64Bit version for us, since I don’t have a 64Bit cpu.
But from what I saw so far, I don’t think 3DConnexion has a 64Bit safe plugin for Blender yet.

August 6th, 2007 at 15:17
Thanks again, Rui!
The most meaningful message I get from Terminal is
dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/local/lib/libIex.4.dylib
When I try the same with the build I’ve been using, it launches right away, but I get
Compiled with Python version 2.5.
sys:1: RuntimeWarning: Python C API version mismatch for module Blender: This Python has API version 1013, module Blender has version 1012.
Ooh, the delights of UNIX !
August 6th, 2007 at 15:40
Tom Telos:
The problem here is that your build has a dynamic link to one of the OpenEXR libraries (libIex). You have two options to fix this problem:
1. Download, and build OpenEXR to the default location of /usr/local/lib (it is pretty easy).
2. We’ll re-link that binary for you. This is the best option, as others will experience the same problem.
In the future, you can find this kind of information out on Mac OS X by typing in Terminal:
otool -L
That will tell you what libraries are linked statically and dynamically.

Well . . . either both sentences, or just the first . . . I like it either way.
The time and brainpower this would save, bypassing the wonderfully (though painfully) contrived convention of middle mouse buttons and alt/ctrl/shift key combinations, is utterly astounding . . .

He kissed her and after that he got up and said: “Behold the power of Blender and 3DConnection ! Behold the power of creation !”. He was now free …

Hi, I just wanted to let people know that the “3Dconnexion” builds already have the plugins installed - they are ready to go!. No need to follow the installation steps (because there’s nothing to install) or to download a separate plugin. I noticed that this is also true for the other Windows builds as well.

3DConnexion: BlenderBuilds in the palm of your hand
August 8th, 2007 at 23:19
I’m having difficulty navigating in Blender. I got my Space Navigator a few weeks ago and tried it out with a 2.42 NDoF build which I had a similar experience with. The view always rotates around the focus point. I’ve tried switching between turntable and trackball and I can’t tell the difference. Google Earth works just the way I’d expect though. Also, Blender doesn’t show up as a customizable Application under the 3Dconnexion Control Panel.
August 9th, 2007 at 8:41
To RipSting:
This is still a testing build, so it is natural that problems do arise.
But in this case, have you tried using the buttons on the SpaceNavigator do change to fly more and other ?

on OS X, you can add a new config for Blender in the 3Dconnexion Pref Pane.
Trackball mode is currently not supported but it will. For the buttons to work, make sure you select “Button 1″ and “Button 2″ in the Buttons tab of the 3Dconnexion Pref Pane.

Anyway. Thats great news and came really unexpected to me. I have worked with Solid Works and a Space Mouse for a few years now and every time I switch over to Blender my hand moves automatically to The 3Dconnexion device. So far with no effect which has been really irritating. Looking forward to use it with Blender.
Great Work!!!
August 10th, 2007 at 10:45
Yesterday my Spacenavigator arrived.
I had to compile and install OpenEXR. This blenderbuild (OSX Intel) needs that library.
It works quite nice in Object and Edit mode. But it’s not working in sculpt mode, yet
Anyway, a great tool for blender.
August 10th, 2007 at 10:59
Hi, regarding OSX-build:
1.)If some lib´s are missed, they are not static
bundled to the programm, this should be corrected.
2.)API-mismatch errors are caused by an confusion between preinstalled python 2.3.5 and
python 2.5.1. These are little landmines and should be corrected.
In between i learned how to avoid this trouble when building on OSX: move the dylibs aside,
change the path for python in the config.py.
My buils on Graficall are o.k. since i used this tip.

Reading the blog post again it seems like I was the major contributor to this effort… I’d like to make this clear: I was not.
3Dconnexion is NOT the only entity who made this possible. It’s not even the biggest IMO. We should all thank the Blender Foundation and its developers (Jean-Luc (lukep), SteveF (sfgoros), Martin and probably the others I am forgetting) for contributing the majority of the code and giving us the NDOF branch on their svn servers and the “can do” attitude. This is a community based effort, not a single corporation effort. Just wanted to make this clear.

I’ve been waiting for SpaceNavigator support in Blender and finally, it comes. So I buy one.
Like a child with a new toy, I plug it in, go through the Google Earth Demo and standard demos. They all work.
And then I try to get it working with Blender. And it doesn’t. And I’m disappointed. And I try to follow instructions to the letter. And it still doesn’t work and I’m still disappointed.
I’m keen to help this community effort (and get mine working), so please let me know what I can to to debug… Is there a dev forum somewhere I can participate in?
Cheers, David
August 17th, 2007 at 12:25
like David Bond allready said. I have the same problem.
Have recieved my SpaceNavigator just yesterday.
everything worked great except for Blender.
thes are the steps I did.
1. have Downloaded and install the 3Dconnexion driver “3DxSoftware 3.4.2″ for SpaceNavigator SE and Windows XP 32 bit from:
http://www.3dconnexion.com
2. Downloaded the latest plug-in for my platform from above
3. Uncompressed the zip file.
now in step 4. it says to only copy the 3DxNdofBlender.plug into the “plugins” folder but there are more files in the ZIP file, what is with them ??? Well I allso tryed to copie the whole uncompressed File into the corresponding File but didnt work so in which “plugins” folder should I copy it???
I did it into
“Blender\plugins\3DxNdofBlender.plug”
but there is also “Blender\plugins\include\” where I tryed it, but still wont work.
5. my 3DConnexion driver was running
6. launched blender from here
“Blender\blender.exe”
and voila nothing happened.
I hope someone will fix the bug fast or write a better instruction
or are we just to stupid to understand it
thanks in advance
PS: and for what stands the NDOF and for what do I have to know it???
August 17th, 2007 at 17:35
To TC & David Bond:
You haven’t to start blender.exe. You have to download blender_ndof (there are three of them: Normal;
Optim. SSE2; 3DConnexion). Copy the content of the zip file inside blender folder and run blender_ndof.exe.

Hi all,
got a space navigator since 3 days and all working fine under Ubuntu (tip for Ubuntu users : install “libmotif3″ from synaptic instead the lib the 3dconnexion
.
app. looking for) (if it don´t run
But it won´t work in the “Sculpt Mode”. is there a workaround or is it a beta problem ?

It only seems to have five degrees of rotation, not six, unfortunately. Also, attempting to render will automatically crash blender. Instantly. Still, it’s really cool- and downright useful. I just have to load up the official build (without the spacenavigator support) in order to render anything. Oh, and save often.

We keep hearing that it will be announced….When!

Who won?

Too bad I just now saw this contest. Too easy:
“BlenderBuilds… 3DConnexion… now go create the multiverse. ”
Maybe that’s what he was waiting for, to announce the winner.
:-)

Very cool! Thanks to the coders and 3dconnexion!
I’ve just received my SpaceNavigator and its awesome with Blender!
Could do with being a bit speedier though and some speed options for the various axes.
But I am in love!

think there has never been a contest… or why they don’t name the winner?!
:/

HEY! THIS IS IMPORTANT!
I just got my space navigator in the mail today. The axis bindings for this are really screwed up and all that happens is I get confused and lose track of where I am. All the axii are backwards too, but it mostly just drives me crazy that up/down and zoom in/out are swapped.
September 11th, 2007 at 3:58
Okay I figured out that the swap was simple to fix and staring me in the face right there in the config panel. Obvious things to still fix (for me) would be the reversal for just turntable mode and if twisting actually did something useful. Translations are annoyingly global-coordinate dependent. Fly mode bindings don’t make sense. And last of all, like others are saying, it’d be nice if we could move around in more than one axis at a time. Keep up the great work. This is very promising progress! I hate to sound naggy… It’s so close from being perfect!

I have started a thread tracking many bugs. Can someone please comment/confirm these? Especially if you are running Linux or OSX. I’m running XP.
http://www.3dconnexion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6637#6637
I’d love to help with the testing, debugging or coding. Download a 3DS Max 9 trial and experience the Navigator in that application to feel what the Blender driver will hopefully feel like someday.
Good start for Alpha. I’d like to see the developer confirm the bugs and address them though.

I did all the above tricky inbstallation methods… It doesn’t work at all. (WinXP)
Google earth works fine with the device, but Blender only with keyboard and dull mouse.
Time is running out man, bullshit.

Navigator does not work inspite of the nice description for XP Home 2nd SE and the exact followed advices.
Copuld it be that homre XP is a piece of shit? I had a bunch of big problems because of different XP home OS behave total different on the same PC..

i know that this site is closing soon.. sadly..
but still, i would like to suggest to BlenderBuilds or whoever is still interested in developing this plugin that there should be Sensors in GameLogic that could detect 3dconnection as inputs.. that would be benificial for BGE users…
cheers
