Official Blender Foundation Blender 2.43 RC1 (UPDATE 2)
January 3rd, 2007 by
Rui Campos (rcas)
The Blender Foundation just released Blender 2.43 Release Candidate 1.
Time as come for everyone to help Blender, to do this, download the builds and test them as much as possible.
UPDATE: There is a known bug in the Windows version of this Release Candidate, it has to do with using the F key (scaling) in the Sculpt Brush, use the panel instead. A fixed release is scheduled for tomorrow.
UPDATE 2: A fixed Windows build is now available here .
The list of features and improvements is huge.
For an overview of the changes here are some articles that relate to it:
- BlenderNation 2.42a till September CVS report
- BlenderNation October CVS report
- BlenderNation November CVS Report
- Official Release Log
Do remember that this isn’t the final release, as the name implies, it is a Release Candidate, might have some bugs and some issues, this is why it needs as much testing as possible.
If you do find a bug please head over to the Blender Bug Tracker and see if someone else has already reported it.
If not, login (or register if you haven’t yet) and post a new item on the tracker.
When reporting a bug please use the following guidelines:
- Verify its a Bug:
- Is it something that is supposed and intended to work ? (e.g. not a feature request)
- Can you repeat it consistantly ?
- Check all steps you did to get the bug, can steps be omitted ?
- Always verify it with the previous & official release of Blender and mention how it went.
- If possible, check on another computer.
- When Reporting:
- Make sure you are logged in to the site, anonymous reporting should be disabled.
- Always mention your OS version, 3D card type and Blender version.
- If it is an OpenGL or gfx related: post in the OpenGL tracker.
- Only provide reports with instructions on how to reproduce the error.
- Always upload a .blend file containing the problem.
You can download the builds at the foundation website.
Have fun testing.

Hello
Good progress so far, no serious trouble
with rc1-Version on Intel-Mac.
But i have to criticise the fact, that it is still
based on this old Python 2.3. Whether bundled with OSX or not, it is no problem to install a newer one ( 2.5 is faster and has fixed safety-leaks !). I now have a lot of actual scripts, that
won´t work with Python before 2.4.
So please would you make an altnternate
build with 2.5 ( as you did with 2.4.2 PPC ).
I would feel much better thean.
Anyway, many thanks for your great work
on blender 2.4.3..

To Jens:
There is much talk on this among the developers, the problem stands with the bundled python being still 2.3 .
There is also talk on loading python as a plugin or something similar to avoid linking to a specific python version.
Hopefully a decision will be made on this and people will have the best of all worlds.
I will try to have Jonathan and Timothy building a version with 2.4 too, let me check with them, it sounds easy, but for building it isn’t that simple.
According to Jonathan, Python 2.4 for Mac comes in several flavors and each of them installs in a specific folder, killing the purpose of compiling Blender against one of them, that would leave the others in trouble.
Until Apple releases their own Python 2.4 package it is still a pain in the @ss to have it working with Blender properly.

Hi
I see the problem.
When i first used blender PPC 2.4.2 on my old
G4-mashine, i installed Python 2.4 seperately and had no trouble. I didn´t know that it is path-sensitive. So i will write a note to Apple ADC too.
If you like to have a tester, write me please, I will do what i can to help you. And please, why no jump to Python 2.5, so we are state of the art on OSX then ?

Hey Jens:
Decisions of this kind can’t be done by myself, and from what I’m aware there are some scripts that won’t work well with Python 2.5 .
The best solution would be to load python at runtime, lets see how it goes.

In a unoficial release i saw some itens like the export UV plugins..normals and vertex paint..that i didn’t encounter in this version, and, exporting by the other, it don’t run..why?
and…will you include the Jahka particle in this release, 2.43?…
i think it is all
thanks^^

To Fraguto:
You might have downloaded a patched version of Blender that contained several things not in CVS.
Jahka particles stuff won’t be in this release.
Have fun,

Rui,
if someone could do a new cvs MSVC windows build it would be appreciated; apparently the windows build got done via a shortlived sculpt bug that causes a crash… it is fixed in CVS …

To LetterRip:
This is a pointer to the official RC1 builds.
Our own builds will be posted next Monday and have this fix.
But if you want one right away I can ask Eugene to make one.

the new particles are not on the OS X 10.3 build, can someone make a build please thanks :]
January 4th, 2007 at 10:15
To fried:
The new particles won’t be in the 2.43 release, as far as I can tell.
We might have a patched version of Blender available sometime near the middle of the month.
Best chance is to go to Graphicall and download a build with it.

Hi folks, FYI regarding OSX-Intel:
Iám just fiddling around with an intel-build from grafical based on Py 2.4x. Downloaded Py 2.4.4 from python.org and have no prob´s so far to get it to work. Blender sys-info shows 2.4.4 and no
errors. At all the build is not fully stable yet, so is the official Blender 2.4.3rc1. Some minor grafical glitchess, some crash´s, some incompatibilities to former workfiles. But in general great work. The py 2.4 build has new particelsys implemented, wow !!!

Only Grab works in sculpt mode PPC ? Ultra slow at zooming when in sculpt. What is a Blender version for PPC where Sculpt Mode is fully implemented and working ? It’s not in 242a PPC at all for example.
Thanks

To Fred:
This is official 2.43 RC1, we will make our own builds available soon so you can test them.
2.42a is the previous release, it doesn’t have Sculpt Mode implemented.
Follow the guidelines I provided and make a bug report.
To Jens:
My Guys are working on building with Python 2.4 and 2.3 for Mac OS X, but it will most likely be only for February release.

Hello
After a few days, i like to share my experience with Python 2.3.5 (preinstalled ) and additional 2.4.4 install.
I´ve encountered no prob´s using it side by side.
Official RC1 uses 2.3- and other Build uses 2.4.-version. Another effct is, some aditional scripts are now running ´cause needing 2.4.+.
Experienced with OSX 10.4.8 on a MacPro.(intel)
Hope this is useful…Jens

Is a fixed release still in the works?? The entry above says “tomorrow,” but that was last week!
January 9th, 2007 at 23:07
To Terri:
I asked the BF guys and they say it is now fixed. I asked three days ago and it wasn’t, that’s why I kept the notice.
Fixed now, will update the article.

Seems like Eugene has built the fixed build and we are hosting it, so, use the link on the UPDATE 2 text I posted.

I think sculpt isn’t working in Mac OS X PPC, cause I can’t draw, I can only push/pull and slightly inflate!
multires works though! it’s really cool!

Is there any plan to include FFMPEG in the Windows releases? That’s the major thing stopping me from using these builds…….
January 10th, 2007 at 12:33
To Myster:
Eugene is working on it for our own builds, so, hopefully soon you will have it.
Anyway, in Windows you have Windows own system that is already integrated with Blender, why do you need FFMPEG that badly ?
FFMPEG is something that Linux guys really needed compared to the other platforms…
– Rui –
January 11th, 2007 at 7:26
Hehe, because FFMPEG just works. The Windows Codecs aren’t as usefull….. (I don’t enjoy having to keep all my rendering computers current with the same versions of third-party plugins…..)
Also, my main use of Blender right now is the Sequencer, and being able to read in .mov’s, and the like is fairly usefull.
Not only this, but with FFMPEG, when I render out a sequence, the sound is pre-mixed into the AVI, another usefull feature.
And Eugene, no hurry. What I’ve got right now works fine, and this is a great community service you’re doing for us. Thanks a bunch you guys!
January 11th, 2007 at 12:15
To Myster_EE:
That’s true.
We are fixing some issues with the latest sources and build systems, hopefully next monday we will have a clean build for everyone to test.
